PROSAMI Board Member: Charles Lewis; Telemedicine Expert
Charles Lewis is a crucial leader for PROSAMI. He met our PROSAMI team in June 2015 and shared the many possibilities of enhanced transcontinental nurse-midwifery education in the rural CONGO (DRC) using current telemedicine technology. By Jan 2016, Charles had the primary telemedicine link between Virginia and Mbuji-Mayi, in the center of DRC, up and running. We initiated our first class with telemidwifery in the summer of 2016. Instructors from England, the United States, and South Africa participated with the first telemedicine-supported class of 19 students. Charles has supported the monthly set up of Zoom meetings for PROSAMI Board members for two years. In the last year, he has worked closely with our Telemidwifery Educational Coordinator, Agnes Kanyanya, and the Obstetrics Dept on The arrangement of OB fellows lectures for the nurse-midwifery course. PROSAMI is gliding through the second class of midwifery students, with 37 In this cohort. Telemidwifery has streamlined the didactic and written examination parts of The intensive 18-month program. Charles is also very active in the leadership of his local church, and participates in many of The school activities for his children. Charles has enabled PROSAMI to undertake the daunting Task of global telemidwifery education for the health care underserved province of the DRC.
